The Winter 2012 Going Organic Guide
“MAKING A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE” AWARD
Goes To: Ms. Dessa Reed of Palm Springs
Going Organic Guide is proud to honor dessa reed. dessa is a suc- cessful speaker, author, teacher, colum- nist and poet, volunteering her time to mentor our valley youth.
After a near-fatal auto accident in 1997, Dessa began to write down some of her feelings. Her insights soon turned into poetry; and her experience, ‘from wheelchair to recovery, one poem at a time,’ changed her life and the lives of others in a positive way.
Dessa is a very caring person, who’s poetry is unique in its ability to touch the heart of the listener. She believes that healing can be achieved through writing poems; and has devoted many years to teaching students the beneficial art of writing poetry.
For several years, Dessa judged and funded annual poetry contests at three local high schools. Last year, she mentored a student in the Senior arts program at palm Springs High School, and helped the student publish a book of their own poems. Her continued guidance and support has helped our local students discover new talent and belief in themselves.
Despite her demanding schedule, she also takes the time to volunteer at Juvenile Hall. By motivating clarity, creativity and confidence, she helps the young inmates discover their poetic voice.
Dessa has traveled the country giving poetry readings and speaking about her favorite subject, ‘Poetic Living.’ She was among the first visiting poets allowed in china; and gave lectures on poetry to college students in Beijing and high school
students in Shanghai. She has taken root in palm Springs, where she continues to inspire our local youth in this exciting way.
Congratulations, Dessa! Patricia Bragg wants you to enjoy one of her books on healthy living, and receive her gratitude and appreciation for your great community service.
