Can laughter sharpen your mind, increase your blood circulation and elevate your immune response? “Yes”, appears to be the answer to all three of these questions. In fact, many studies have shown that laughter is a necessary component of better health.
When Ron Berk PHD psychologist, taught at the Johns Hopkins Medical Center, he found that including jokes and humor in his lectures caused a profound reversal in his students’ “lecture induced narcolepsy.” He divided the class into two groups. One group had funny test instructions at the top of the page. The other group had regular test instructions. The humorous test group consistently attained higher test scores. Berk is so serious about using humor as a teaching tool, he authored a book titled, Humor as an Instructional Defibrillator: Evidence-Based Techniques in Teaching and Assessment.
As further proof that the benefits of laughing is no joke, a study conducted at Loma Linda University found that laughter increased immune response by an impressive 14%. Additionally, a cardiologist at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore concluded from the results of a study, that laughing subjects had an increase in blood circulation that equaled a treadmill session.
Laughter stimulates the production of dopamine in the brain, and that makes us “feel good.” If humor is the key to a healthier heart, sharper brain and elevated immune response, what more could we possibly ask for?…Well, maybe just one organic, sugar-free chocolate candy bar.
